A Tale of Two Funds: Honoring Heroes or Rewarding Insurrectionists?

Speaker Mike Johnson’s decision to block a plaque honoring Capitol Police officers who defended democracy on January 6 is a slap in the face to the 140 injured officers and the families of those who died in the aftermath. These brave officers, still struggling with physical and mental wounds, have received no compensation.
But just two months after pardoning more than 1,500 violent criminals who attacked the Capitol, Trump plans a “compensation fund” because “they were treated so unfairly.” Despite Trump’s false claim that these insurrectionists were “peaceful,” they left destruction, injuries, and even death in their wake.
Many were ordered to pay restitution for damages, but after Trump’s mass pardon, taxpayers were left covering the cost. Now, Trump wants to financially reward them, even as his billionaire caretaker claims to fight “excessive government spending.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin put it best: “Trump, do you want to set up a compensation fund for the 140 sworn police officers wounded by your J6 'patriots' too? Or is it just the criminals you’re proposing to pay reparations?”
Trump and his billionaire cronies continue to rewrite history—prioritizing insurrectionists over the very officers who defended the Capitol. The question is: will Americans let them?
