In a cringeworthy moment during a live press event in the Oval Office, former President Donald Trump publicly berated Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (this is the correct spelling), parroting Russian talking points. The Kremlin’s reaction was immediate — a gleeful nod of approval.
But the real focus of Trump’s unhinged rant, however, was his belief that Zelenskyy hadn’t properly thanked him—despite Trump only being in office for 30 days and actively working to freeze aid to Ukraine. What Trump wanted was not gratitude, but for Zelenskyy to grovel at his feet.
Trump deliberately ignored—or due to cognitive decline couldn't remember—that Zelenskyy had publicly thanked the American people on numerous occasions, including during his historic address to Congress, where he said, "I hope my words of respect and gratitude resonate in each American heart."
Trump’s childish tirade, full of self-serving lies, was not only embarrassing and well-received in Moscow. Zelensky, has been seeking security guarantees when Russia eventually breaks the agreement (not an if, but when). Yet, Trump is bullying Zelenskyy to give the U.S. an interest in Ukraine’s valuable minerals, while pushing him toward a diplomatic solution on Putin’s terms.
Even Republican members of Congress were embarrassed by Trump’s unhinged behavior. Representative Don Bacon (R-Neb.) characterized the meeting between Trump and Zelensky as a “bad day” for U.S. foreign policy.
But the ever-obsequious hypocrite Senator Lindsey Graham scrambled to Trump’s defense, shamelessly praising Trump for “standing up for our country,” saying he has “never been more proud” of the President.
Trump’s appropriation of Ukraine’s resources will inevitably benefit his billionaire handlers and large corporations. They, along with Trump, will be the big winners at the expense of the Ukrainian people. With Trump, it’s always about the grift.
In this moment, Trump demonstrated that the U.S. is no longer the unwavering leader of the free world, as his actions continue to align more with Russian interests than those of his own country.
