Senate GOP Advances Permanent Trump Tax Cuts Amid Pushback by Democrats

In a dramatic overnight session, Senate Republicans narrowly passed a sweeping framework for trillions in tax cuts and spending reductions, reigniting a central Trump-era agenda. The 51-48 vote mostly followed party lines, with GOP Senators Susan Collins and Rand Paul breaking ranks over concerns about Medicaid cuts and ballooning deficits.

The proposal aims to make permanent Trump’s 2017 tax cuts and includes $175 billion each for the Pentagon and immigration enforcement. Democrats fiercely opposed the measure, offering over two dozen amendments targeting Trump’s tariffs, wealthy tax breaks, and safety net protections—all of which failed.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune rallied Republicans, framing the move as crucial to avoiding tax hikes for American families. But critics argue the package, with its projected $7 trillion price tag, disproportionately favors the wealthy while threatening essential services.

“This isn’t fiscal responsibility—it’s a giveaway,” said Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer.

The bill now heads to the House, where deep divides over Medicaid, food stamps, and debt limits could complicate final passage. Still, GOP leaders are urging unity, saying the framework sets the stage for broader negotiations and promises kept to voters.

With midterms looming and economic uncertainty rising, the high-stakes battle over taxes, spending, and Trump’s legacy is just getting started.
