Trump’s Tax Plan: A Gift to Billionaires, a Threat to Everyday Americans

Speaker Mike Johnson and congressional Republicans are advancing a controversial agenda aligned with Trump’s goals: cutting $1.5 trillion from essential programs like Medicaid and SNAP while delivering $5 trillion in tax breaks to the wealthy, including Trump and his billionaire cronies like Elon Musk. To fast-track this plan, Republicans are using the reconciliation process, which allows them to bypass typical legislative procedures.

This morning, Republicans passed a vague budget framework in both chambers of Congress, though internal GOP divisions made even this first step contentious. A new analysis from the Congressional Budget Office projects that the Republican tax plan—including an extension of the 2017 tax cuts and $1.5 trillion in new tax benefits—would add $6 trillion to the national deficit over ten years.

To counterbalance this, Republicans must now find $880 billion in deficit reduction, largely through proposals from the Energy and Commerce Committee, with Medicaid in the crosshairs. This has sparked tension within the party: moderates fear cuts that would hurt beneficiaries, while far-right members are pushing for deep reductions.

As Republicans debate the details, critics argue the plan exposes a fundamental betrayal of working- and middle-class Americans. Advocates for these programs urge public pressure, transparency, and resistance.

It’s not just policy—it’s a fight for fairness.
